Responsible for establishing the vision of each issue of the magazine, developing the editorial calendar, assigning and editing stories, hiring freelance writers and photographers, overseeing art directors, overseeing advertising sales, managing the magazine’s budget, managing the schedule, ensuring timely publication and assisting with all aspects of production. During my tenure I have streamlined the budget, improved the online version of the magazine so that it is more robust and allows for commenting, created a special edition of the December issue broken out into two targeted audiences, improved advertising sales and developed increasingly compelling editorial content. The magazine has been lauded by alumni and university stakeholders for the improvements in editorial content and design.
Circulation: 10,000 Audience: 100% college educated Frequency: Bi-annual
I was brought onboard to invigorate the communications program and publications, especially the alumni magazine. In doing so I developed a new brand for the School of Law and reinvented the alumni magazine. This visual and editorial redesign featured a new, more appropriate name (UW Law); four-color design (versus two-color); increased length; improved editorial style and more relevant content focused on newsworthiness, timeliness, engaging feature articles, and research and legal-issue stories of interest to our audience. It garnered rave reviews from alumni, donors, faculty and the dean.
As editor, I determined editorial direction for UW Law, wrote articles, edited all content, hired freelancers, and managed all aspects of the design, production and dissemination of the 44-page magazine. I also directed and oversaw other communications projects for the School, ensuring a strong brand presence and editorial voice, and helping the school develop and maintain a unique and competitive stance.
Circulation: 37,000 Audience: 100% college educated Frequency: Bi-annual
Developed Business into a highly-read alumni magazine for the UW Business School. Developed an editorial voice trusted by alumni, improved content and increased newsworthiness and timeliness. Reduced costs of magazine by $15,000 per issue. Won numerous regional and national awards.
In addition to determining the editorial direction of Business, I hired and managed freelancers, wrote and edited content and managed the design, production and dissemination of a 48-page magazine. I also produced two separate annual development publications and a quarterly electronic newsletter.
